Hyperrealism Sculpture

Ceci n'est pas un corps.

22.11.19 - 02.08.20

An exhibition presented by Tempora (Be) and IKA (De)

We are very pleased to tell you that the exhibition at La Boverie will reopen on Tuesday 19 May! We worked on a plan to make that reopening as safe and as simple as possible for our visitors and staff.

Over the last few weeks we have done everything in our power to extend the exhibit until 2 August 2020, and to give everyone a chance to come face-to-face with the stunning hyperrealistic sculptures. This exhibition will open from Tuesday to Friday from 9:30am to 6 pm and in the weekends from 10am to 6pm.

To protect you and the people around you, we will be applying the government's social distancing guidelines. Unfortunately, we are not able to allow group visits. Nor, regrettably, are we able to arrange guided tours.

"Hyperrealism" is an art movement that began in the United States in the 1970s. Shunning abstraction, the hyperrealist artist seeks to achieve a meticulous representation of nature, to the point that observers sometimes wonder if they are in the presence of living bodies. The works are sometimes amusing, sometimes disturbing, but always meaningful.

With a selection of some forty hyperrealist sculptures by leading international artists (Paul McCarthy, George Segal, Ron Mueck, Maurizio Cattelan, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Duane Hanson, Carole Feuerman, John De Andrea, and others) the exhibition “Ceci n’est pas un corps. Hyperrealism – Sculpture” will illustrate the evolution of the human figure in the works of hyperrealist sculptors from the 1970s to the present day. The selection will highlight different key issues in this approach to figurative realism and show how our perception of the human body has continuously evolved.
