LIÈGE. CHEFS-D’ŒUVRE (Works of art)

21.12.2018 > 18.08.2019 | LIÈGE. CHEFS-D’ŒUVRE (Works of art)

A view of the permanent collections of the Liege Museum of Beaux Arts

From 15th century or Renaissance masters to more recent donations and acquisitions, including major international figures (Ingres, Monet, Pissarro, Picasso, Ensor, Laurencin, Léger, Arp, Magnelli, Bury, Debré, Hantaï, Gilbert & George...), the Liège. Chefs-d’oeuvre exhibition will offer an unprecedented journey through the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège.

An opportunity for the people of Liège but also for all the Belgian and foreign visitors, to discover a vast selection of exceptional works, to perceive the considerable richness of this collection.

This unprecedented exhibition - presenting more than 250 works - will be original in more than one way. Since the reopening of La Boverie in May 2016, many works, which remained in reserve, had not been shown for a long time. For others, weakened by time, a restoration was necessary. The Liège. Chefs-d’œuvre exhibition intends to establish a dialogue between the periods and the formal movements, not without offering visitors some particular focus, on certain artists and artistic currents: the luminous talent of Rik Wouters, variations on the theme of still life or special attention to the Cobra movement, passing by an evocation of the steel industry of the Liège industrial area through the eyes of artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

In anticipation of this exhibition, and after a first volume published during its reopening in May 2016, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège is also preparing for the publication of the second volume of the catalogue of collections. This beautiful book of art will include a selection of about 150 pieces, commentated by art historians and qualified scholars.
