A SELECTION OF WORKS ON PAPER FROM THE PRINTS AND DRAWINGS DEPARTMENT

The collection of the Cabinet des Estampes et des Dessins extends from he 16th century to the present day, with more than 50,000 works.
The selection presented here examines the formal vocabulary that artists from Liege and abroad used in their graphic work throughout the 20th century, in line with a new conception of the world.

Breaking with the traditional vision of art as an imitation of reality, artists repositioned themselves in relation to chromatic and formal research for its own sake. Around 1910, they arbitrarily played with lines, shapes and colours. the Neo-plasticism proposed the creation of an artistic form based on pure elements, whose order, governed by human, was opposed to the abundance of broken and curved lines. This is the Abstraction, a major turning point in art at the threshold of a century that will leave a deep imprint until today.

During this long evolution of almost a century, artists reinvented the language of emotion through large coloured areas composed of geometric or free forms. Some create a powerful formal language, ordered by lines and colours known as pure, others strive to simplify their forms as much as possible towards a stylisation of the pictorial language. Still others introduce movement through formal, even musical, chromatic vibrations. These experiments nourished an aesthetic that spread through various channels: art criticism, studio conversation and artists' treatises.

Through the multitude of forms of abstraction, the artists explore new paths and take the public into a universe where the reference points open up towards wider fields.
