Partnership with the Louvre

The Louvre is involved in a partnership with La Boverie providing artistic consultancy services.

The mission includes mentoring La Boverie and the City of Liège in organising three major international exhibitions (one exhibition per year between 2016 and 2018). The Louvre is also supervising the exhibition design for the temporary and permanent collections for the first year of the agreement.

The theme of the first exhibition, “En Plein Air” (“In the open Air”), underpins the strong link between the museum and its surrounding park: as a matter of fact, the role that the Boverie island has played in Liège’s inhabitants’ lives is similar to that of the banks of the Seine Riverin Paris in the beginning of the 20th century.

“En Plein Air” presents around a hundred works by artist such as Corot, Joseph Vernet, Boudin, Monet, Evenepoel, Pissaro, Cezanne, Picasso, Bonnard, Renoir, etc., coming from the collections of La Boverie, the Louvre, but also from Belgian and foreign prestigious art institutions.

In 2017, the “Journey to Italy” could be the theme of the second exhibition.

Originally, the collaboration between the two institutions stems from strong scientific and cultural links between the Louvre and the museums of Liège, more particularly, between Vincent Pomarède, head curator and director of cultural programming at the Louvre, and the City of Liège’s teams.

As regards the Louvre, its aim is continue a strategy of international cooperation, in particular with the cities and institutions that make it possible to bring the museum closer to its public.

Since it opened in 2012, the Louvre-Lens boasts an increasing number of regular visitors from Belgium making them the best represented nationality in terms of visits.

In parallel, the City of Liège is currently engaged in an ambitious project to promote its heritage.

The partnership is run by the Liège museums management board and the City of Liège’s Culture-Tourism department. For the Louvre it is overseen by “Louvre Conseil”, a team dedicated to promoting and transmiting the Louvre’s know-how to external partners.
