Prix de la Création 2022

The jury for the Prix de la Création de la Ville de Liège met to examine the 24 applications received and select the two winners of the Prix de la Création 2022.

This prize, which is open to any artist born or resident in the province of Liège, has been awarded for the past 15 years by the City of Liège to reward the development of a Liège artist in contemporary artistic expression. The aim of the prize is to recognise an artist's career, development, maturity and overall artistic achievement.

The jury has decided to award this year's first prize, worth €6,000, to Stéphane GILOT and the second prize, worth €4,000, to Matthieu LITT.

Stéphane GILOT
Born in Ougrée in 1969.

Originally from Liège, Stéphane Gilot lives between Montreal and Liège. His multidisciplinary work combines drawing, modelling, architectural installation, video and performance. His reflexive approach to the contexts of intervention and exhibition also offers a range of experiments on the issues raised by the protocols of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Since 2013, he has been a professor at the School of Visual and Media Arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal. Stéphane Gilot now divides his time between Europe and North America. His recent projects have been exhibited in Liège, Maastricht, Berlin and Ireland, as well as in Montreal, Quebec City, Havana, Toronto, Boston and Salt Lake City.

Stéphane GILOT, Le catalogue des futurs, architectural, video and performance installation. Video, sound (12 channels - 4 video projections, 8 video screens), constructions of architectural spaces, objects (works from the collection and performance artefacts), model, 22 drawings, artist's book. Musée d'art de Joliette, 2016

Matthieu LITT
Born in Liège in 1983.

A graphic designer before completing his training in photography in Liège, Matthieu Litt is interested in the notion of distance and rapprochement; in ways of blurring the lines and reference points between images from radically different horizons or contexts.

Terra Nullius, his most recent series, consists of hyper-real photographs of the Arctic that almost defy reality, alluding to our sense of the real and the virtual and our obsession with focusing on other planets, while neglecting what we have at hand on earth.

Allusive and contemplative, at once enigmatic and poetic, his malleable universe is willingly declined in studied scenographies, the presentation of the work to enrich the scope and the meaning counting as much for him as the creation of the images themselves. This reconstruction also allows him to find critical angles that differ from the traditional means of awakening the public to the environmental and consumer issues that are close to his heart.

Five artists have been selected by the jury for the en Piste! exhibition, which will be held at La Boverie from 25 August to 3 September 2023: in addition to the two winners Stéphane GILOT and Matthieu LITT, they are Michaël NICOLAÏ, Fabien ROUWETTE and Sven LAURENT.
